คำกริยาช่วย (Auxiliary Verbs/Modal Verbs/helping Verbs)
คำกริยาช่วย ที่ใช้ช่วยในการสร้าง Tense มักจะไม่มีความหมาย
แต่กริยาช่วยบางคำสามารถใช้เป็นกริยาแท้ได้และจะมีความหมายในตัวเอง เช่น
is แปลว่า เป็น,อยู่,คือ... He is an engineer. (เขาเป็นวิศวกรคนหนึ่ง)
is จะไม่มีความหมาย... She is cooking. ( หล่อนกำลังปรุงอาหาร )
คำกริยาช่วย มีทั้งหมด 24 คำ
Verb to be ... is, am, are, was, were ใช้ประกอบ Continuous tense และ Passive Voice
Verb to do ... do, does, did .ใช้ช่วยสร้างประโยคคำถาม/ปฏิเสธ ใน Simple Tense
Verb to have ... have, has, had ใช้ประกอบ Perfect Tense
คำกริยาช่วยที่มีความหมายในตัวเอง มักจะตามด้วยคำกริยาแท้ช่องเดิมเสมอ
will - would ...จะ/shall - should ... จะ / can - could ... สามารถ /may - might ... บางที,อาจจะ/ must ... ต้อง
คำกริยาช่วยที่ใช้กับ to มักจะตามด้วยคำกริยาแท้ช่องเดิมเสมอ
ought to ควรจะ / used to เคย / need to จำเป็นต้อง / dare to กล้าที่จะ
ตัวอย่าง
Present Continuous : My father is driving a car./ Please be quite, I'm working.
Past Continuous : My mother was washing the dishes./ Were you working?
Passive Voice : A car is being driven by my father./ The office was cleaned yesterday.
Present Simple : They do not do their homework.
Present Simple : She does not write a letter.
Past Simple : Did you tell her this top secret ?
Present Perfect : I have finished my work.
Past Perfect : He had not done it yet.
Future Simple : We shall visit the National Museum tomorrow.
Present Simple : I daren't to do bad things.
Present Simple : You ought to stop smoking.

Present Tense
is ใช้กับประธานเอกพจน์ (ยกเว้น I ใช้กับ am และ You ใช้กับ are เสมอ)
are ใช้กับประธานพหูพจน์
Past Tense
was ใช้กับประธานเอกพจน์ (You were เสมอ)
were ใช้กับประธานพหูพจน์
Contractions (รูปย่อ)เมื่อย่อติดกับ not
is not ... isn’t
are not ... aren’t
was not ... wasn’t
were not ... weren’t
(am not ไม่มีรูปย่อ)
